Firepulse aims to become the go-to place for local news as they unfold. We will be chronicling our quest to make Firepulse a reality here. As a start, here are some of the intended specs:

A window to your community
A map travels to the area of the city where a new event has been reported. It displays snippets of videos, pictures or reports. Since we do not expect people to be watching this 24/7, replay mode will replay the stories that have happened up until that time, sorted by time and popularity.

Headlines
Story headlines will be displayed sorted by time and popularity. Members can vote for a story to increase its exposure, prompting more activity and content contribution.

Media Pane
When a headline is clicked, the media pane is displayed this contains:

Reports: The main story can be posted and edited wiki-style with a very basic and simple wysiwig editor or via a simple text only sms interface for mobile phones. Members can also import content from blogs, wikinews, AP, AFP or other news sources by simply copying and pasting the url. (we will fetch the heading, author, date, via rss)

Videos: Videos related to the story can be embedded easily from yahoo, myspace, youtube, etc., or posted directly to the site from the browser or mobile device.

Pictures: Pictures can be imported from photo sites like Flickr, as well as posted directly to the site from the browser or mobile device.

Comments: People will be able to voice their opinions here, comments are also voted up and down based on their relevance and quality. Spammers or inappropriate comments can be flagged.

Social: To raise awareness, a story and all its media can be shared through rss, digg, facebook and del.icio.us

Live Search
Users will be able to search stories, people or places, with results being displayed live as they type.

Navigation and the rest of the application
The navigation will start at the their chosen home location (ex: their home city). From here they can browse stories by categories and time. Under people they can find locals with shared interests as well as add their friends and family to keep each other updated on current events. In the Newsroom, they will find requests for stories, and see stories in the works before they debut their initial publish (stories will almost never be done as information evolves as people continue collaborating to them). People will also be able to go to their profile to edit settings, view their points, and create or modify information filters.
